    Physics of dark energy particles

    We consider the astrophysical and cosmological implications of the existence of a minimum density and mass due to the presence of the cosmological constant. If there is a minimum length in nature, then there is an absolute minimum mass corresponding to a hypothetical particle with radius of the order of the Planck length. On the other hand, quantum mechanical considerations suggest a different minimum mass. These particles associated with the dark energy can be interpreted as the ``quanta'' of the cosmological constant. We study the possibility that these particles can form stable stellar-type configurations through gravitational condensation, and their Jeans and Chandrasekhar masses are estimated. From the requirement of the energetic stability of the minimum density configuration on a macroscopic scale one obtains a mass of the order of 10^55 g, of the same order of magnitude as the mass of the universe. This mass can also be interpreted as the Jeans mass of the dark energy fluid.     Inhomogeneous vacuum energy

    Vacuum energy remains the simplest model of dark energy which could drive the accelerated expansion of the Universe without necessarily introducing any new degrees of freedom. Inhomogeneous vacuum energy is necessarily interacting in general relativity. Although the four-velocity of vacuum energy is undefined, an interacting vacuum has an energy transfer and the vacuum energy defines a particular foliation of spacetime with spatially homogeneous vacuum energy in cosmological solutions. It is possible to give a consistent description of vacuum dynamics and in particular the relativistic equations of motion for inhomogeneous perturbations given a covariant prescription for the vacuum energy, or equivalently the energy transfer four-vector, and we construct gauge-invariant vacuum perturbations.     The physics of spreading processes in multilayer networks

    The study of networks plays a crucial role in investigating the structure, dynamics, and function of a wide variety of complex systems in myriad disciplines. Despite the success of traditional network analysis, standard networks provide a limited representation of complex systems, which often include different types of relationships (i.e., "multiplexity") among their constituent components and/or multiple interacting subsystems. Such structural complexity has a significant effect on both dynamics and function. Throwing away or aggregating available structural information can generate misleading results and be a major obstacle towards attempts to understand complex systems. The recent "multilayer" approach for modeling networked systems explicitly allows the incorporation of multiplexity and other features of realistic systems. On one hand, it allows one to couple different structural relationships by encoding them in a convenient mathematical object. On the other hand, it also allows one to couple different dynamical processes on top of such interconnected structures. The resulting framework plays a crucial role in helping achieve a thorough, accurate understanding of complex systems. The study of multilayer networks has also revealed new physical phenomena that remain hidden when using ordinary graphs, the traditional network representation. Here we survey progress towards attaining a deeper understanding of spreading processes on multilayer networks, and we highlight some of the physical phenomena related to spreading processes that emerge from multilayer structure.Comment: 25 pages, 4 figure

    Microcanonical mean-field thermodynamics of self-gravitating and rotating systems

    We derive the global phase diagram of a self-gravitating NN-body system enclosed in a finite three-dimensional spherical volume VV as a function of total energy and angular momentum, employing a microcanonical mean-field approach. At low angular momenta (i.e. for slowly rotating systems) the known collapse from a gas cloud to a single dense cluster is recovered. At high angular momenta, instead, rotational symmetry can be spontaneously broken and rotationally asymmetric structures (double clusters) appear.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures; to appear in Phys. Rev.     Modulation of tregs and inkt by fingolimod in multiple sclerosis patients

    The altered numbers and functions of cells belonging to immunoregulatory cell networks such as T regulatory (Tregs) and invariant Natural Killer T (iNKT) cells have been reported in Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an immune-mediated disease. We aimed to assess the frequencies of Tregs and iNKT cells in MS patients throughout a one-year treatment with fingolimod (FTY) and to correlate immunological data with efficacy and safety data. The percentage of Tregs (defined as Live Dead-CD3 + CD4 + FoxP3 + CD25++/CD127 12 cells) increased steadily throughout the year, while there was no significant difference in the absolute number or percentage of iNKT cells (defined as CD3 + CD14 12CD19 12 V\u3b124-J\u3b118 TCR+ cells). However, out of all the iNKT cells, the CD8+ iNKT and CD4 12CD8 12 double-negative (DN) cell percentages steadily increased, while the CD4+ iNKT cell percentages decreased significantly. The mean percentage of CD8+ T cells at all time-points was lower in patients with infections throughout the study. The numbers and percentages of DN iNKT cells were more elevated, considering all time-points, in patients who presented a clinical relapse. FTY may, therefore, exert its beneficial effect in MS patients through various mechanisms, including the increase in Tregs and in iNKT subsets with immunomodulatory potential such as CD8+ iNKT cells.     Hβ Stark broadening in cold plasmas with low electron densities calibrated with Thomson scattering

    In the present work Stark broadening measurements have been carried out on low electron density (neb5·1019 m-3) and (relatively) low gas temperature (Tgb1100 K) argon–hydrogen plasma, under low-intermediate pressure conditions (3 mbar–40 mbar). A line fitting procedure is used to separate the effects of the different broadening mechanisms (e.g. Doppler and instrumental broadening) from the Stark broadening. A Stark broadening theory is extrapolated to lower electron density values, below its theoretical validity regime. Thomson scattering measurements are used to calibrate and validate the procedure. The results show in agreement within 20%, what validates the use of this Stark broadening method under such lowdensity conditions. It is also found that Stark broadened profiles cannot be assumed to be purely Lorentzian. Such an assumption would lead to an underestimation of the electron density.     Measuring stress, coping, strain and hopefulness of Brazilian family members of substance misusers:Factor structure of a set of measures

    Objectives: We evaluated the psychometric properties of the Brazilian version of a set of measures designed to assess four psychological constructs associated with having a substance misusing relative in the family: the Family Member Impact (FMI), the Symptom Rating Test (SRT), the Coping Questionnaire (COPE) Hopefulness-hopelessness scale (HOPE). Methods: Secondary data from 3056 affected family members (AFMs) was analyzed. Factor structure of the measures and group invariance across gender were assessed using confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The Brazilian version of COPE showed that a four-factor model with 24 items fit the data better than the original three-factor model with 30 items. The FMI measure showed that a three-factor model is more appropriated to the Brazilian version of the scale than the original two-factor model. HOPE and SRT (29 items) Brazilian’s version had the same two-factor model structure. This set of measures presented full measurement and structural invariance for both male and female. Conclusions: Findings provide support for the structural validity of the Brazilian version of a set of standard measures for the assessment of stress, coping, strain and hopefulness of AFMs by their relatives’ substance misuse. As this is the first study to explore the factorial model of the measures, it provides further support for the use of these instruments for future studies aiming to explore means on supporting AFMs in Brazil and elsewhere.</p

    ERP evidence suggests executive dysfunction in ecstasy polydrug users

    Background: Deficits in executive functions such as access to semantic/long-term memory have been shown in ecstasy users in previous research. Equally, there have been many reports of equivocal findings in this area. The current study sought to further investigate behavioural and electro-physiological measures of this executive function in ecstasy users. Method: Twenty ecstasy–polydrug users, 20 non-ecstasy–polydrug users and 20 drug-naïve controls were recruited. Participants completed background questionnaires about their drug use, sleep quality, fluid intelligence and mood state. Each individual also completed a semantic retrieval task whilst 64 channel Electroencephalography (EEG) measures were recorded. Results: Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) revealed no between-group differences in behavioural performance on the task. Mixed ANOVA on event-related potential (ERP) components P2, N2 and P3 revealed significant between-group differences in the N2 component. Subsequent exploratory univariate ANOVAs on the N2 component revealed marginally significant between-group differences, generally showing greater negativity at occipito-parietal electrodes in ecstasy users compared to drug-naïve controls.
